The high pressure gas scintillation proportional counter experiment on board BeppoSAX satellite: data analysis and first results.
Abstract
The High Pressure Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter HPGSPC is one of the Narrow Field Instruments on board the BeppoSAX satellite. Exploring the 4 - 120 keV energy range the HPGSPC will investigate all categories of astrophysical sources emitting in the not yet well studied hard X-ray domain. Its very good energy resolution in the hard band (3% at 60 keV) makes it suitable for detailed spectroscopic study of many cosmic X-ray sources. A careful design of the dedicated software implemented both on board and on ground for event processing and data reduction and analysis, the last based on a common framework for SAX (the XAS data analysis system), was developed to fully match the capabilities of the HPGSPC. The authors will describe briefly the experiment and the software and report the first results from the analysis of data relative to the Science Verification Phase. Example of data reduction procedures are also reported.
